Born on April 13, 1871 in Muro Lucano, Italy Salvatore Capezio grew up not wanting to become a construction engineer like his father. Instead he became a cobbler and at the ripe old age of 17 he opened a shop on Broadway and 39th Street in New York offering his talents as a theatrical cobbler.
It didn’t take long before he began making dance shoes for the many dancers on Broadway. Soon dancers would visit his store, tell him of their special needs in dance shoes and he would make and design shoes to their specifications. Capezio dance shoes were born.
In 1910, the famous dancer Anna Pavlova liked Capezio’s work so much that she ordered and purchased Capezio dance shoes for herself and her entire company to wear during her first American tour. This single event insured Capezio’s success.
From his first pair of ballet shoes that provided him a challenge in design to tap and jazz dance shoes Capezio took pride in his work and listened carefully as the dancers described what they would need. His designs met those needs beautifully while being both innovative and durable.
This growing business, became a family business with Capezio’s children joining him in his commitment to make durable and comfortable shoes for the dancing community. He won several prestigious awards before his retirement.
Since his retirement his family has continued to honor the commitment to dancers and the dance community that Salvatore Capezio began in 1887.
Some of the greatest names in dance have worn Capezio dance shoes. Fred Astair, Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis Jr., Gregory Hines and Bob Fosse just to name a few.
